WRDLRNR is a vocabulary game. It keeps only what it needs to remember your progress, and never sells or shares it.
Without an account
- Your progress, rounds and settings are saved in your own browser on your own device. They don't leave it.
- You can save or restore a backup file yourself from Settings and progress.
If you sign in with Google
Signing in is optional. It lets your progress follow you between devices. When you sign in, WRDLRNR saves:
- From your Google account: your account ID, name, email address and profile picture link. Nothing else, and no access to your Gmail, Drive or contacts.
- Your game progress: for each word you play, how often you got it right or wrong and when you last played it. Also the results of your rounds.
This is used only to sync your progress and show who is signed in. There are no ads.
Marathon high scores
- After a Marathon run you can put your score on that language's public high score board, with three initials you pick.
- The board shows only the initials, the score and a picture: your Google profile picture if you're signed in, or a game character if you're not. No names or emails.
- The server keeps the initials, the score, how many words you got right, the date and, if you're signed in, which account posted it. Deleting your account deletes your scores too.
- To stop spam, the server counts how many runs each player or connection posts in an hour. For players who aren't signed in it uses a scrambled (salted and hashed) form of the internet address, which it deletes within a few hours.
Mailing list
- If you sign up for news on the home page, your email address goes to Kit, the service that sends WRDLRNR's emails. Kit sends a confirmation email first; nothing else arrives until you confirm.
- It's only used for WRDLRNR news, like new modes, worlds and bosses. It isn't sold or shared, and it isn't linked to your game progress.
- Every email has an unsubscribe link. Kit follows its own privacy policy.
Analytics
- WRDLRNR uses Google Analytics to learn how the game is played: which screens people visit, which games and languages they pick, and how rounds end. That helps decide what to fix and build next.
- It never sends your name, your email or the words you have learned. Google Analytics follows Google's privacy policy.
- A small note on the title screen asks once. OK turns analytics cookies on; No thanks turns analytics off in this browser. In the EU, the UK and Switzerland no analytics cookies are set until you say OK.
- To change your answer later, open wrdlrnr.com/play/?noga (off) or wrdlrnr.com/play/?ga (on). You can also use Google's opt-out add-on.
Cookies
- One sign-in cookie keeps you signed in for up to about a year. It holds a random code, not your details.
- Google's sign-in button loads Google's own code, which follows Google's privacy policy. While you sign in, Google may set a short-lived security cookie (g_csrf_token) that guards the sign-in.
- Google Analytics sets its own cookies (_ga and _ga_4V2CG9N37Z) to count visits and return visits without knowing who you are, unless you said No thanks (and in the EU, the UK and Switzerland, only after you say OK). See Analytics above.
- There are no advertising cookies.
Spoken words
With Voice on, the word to be spoken is sent to Microsoft Azure to make the audio. Only the word is sent, nothing about you.
Where it's kept
Account data is stored on WRDLRNR's own server at Hostinger, outside the public website files.
Deleting your data
- Sign out: this device stops syncing. Your cloud copy stays for next time.
- Delete account: in Settings and progress, under Your account. This deletes your account, every cloud copy of your progress and your Marathon high scores from the server right away. Progress saved in your browser stays until you clear it.
